Safety foam ^® is used in a variety of applications as a passive, maintenance free system to suppress explosions. This is accomplished by the foam's skeletal network of tiny lightweight interconnecting strands which act as a three dimensional fire screen to help prevent fuel explosions caused by gunfire, electrical ignition, lightning and impacts.

The United States Air Force has successfully used Safety Foam ^® to suppress fuel tank explosions in several types of combat and special mission aircraft since 1966. Safety Foam ^® adds little weight, and reduces the tank's usable fuel by less than 4%. It is also useful as a surge mitigator, a foreign object debris barrier, baffling in boats to reduce slosh, and gasoline can flashback protection in filler spouts.
